Scripture
1 Peter 5:1-5

Authority is a universal need for any group to function effectively, whether in schools, sports teams, or churches. The Bible consistently emphasizes the importance of authority, from the laws given to Moses to the roles of prophets, priests, and kings. In the New Testament, appointing elders in the church was a priority to ensure proper oversight and leadership.

Authority and submission to authority are both necessary within the church. Peter instructs elders to shepherd the flock willingly and by example, avoiding compulsion or selfish gain. Others are urged to submit to their elders. However, both leaders and followers must practice humility to create a harmonious and cooperative community. This balance of humble authority and submission is essential for maintaining order and minimizing hostility within the church.

Personal Reflections
  • What did God say to you through this passage and teaching?
  • Did God reveal anything new to you?
  • How is this relevant in your journey to make disciples who Love God and Love people?

Questions:
  • How does the concept of authority in the Bible compare to contemporary views on leadership and accountability?
  • Why is humility essential for both leaders and followers in minimizing hostility?
  • In what ways can leaders avoid becoming domineering, and instead, lead by example?
  • What does it practically mean that "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble?"
